And the longer version now: a turtle surprised us last night around 10:30. we'd not been expecting one until at least 1 am. She was new and this may be her first nest ever because she sat for a very long time over her egg chamber before any eggs appeared. MLC volunteer Leslie and her mom helped us record the data on April (they also named her). A few hours passed and we thought we were probably finished for the night. When you get an early turtle it?s sometimes difficult to muster the enthusiasm to drive the 20 km in the dark. But we headed out just enjoying the night and the tiny crescent orange moon that rose late.
Around 3 am Niki called from Hutchinson to ask how many turtles we had, because she had 3 on the beach there at the same time. She was able to reach 2 of them in time to get tags on them and fill out data sheets. Chris and I finished our pass and went into the office to check our email (the only emails we get in the middle of the night are from our satellite transmitter turtles!). We looked at some data, I took a 15 minute snooze with my head on the desk then decided it was time to head back to the park and then home.
It was just getting light as I drove out onto the beach and headed south. A couple minutes later I thought I must be dreaming. There was a giant black turtle just above the high tide line and it appeared she had just emerged from the water. Finally, after 5 long years of anticipating the morning turtle, the one that keeps us going in the wee hours of the night, the reason we stay up and survey until 6 am, well here she was! Elusive and mythical until now. I grabbed for my phone. "Chris, morning turtle, right here, right outside the Marinelife Center!" "I'll be right there!", he yelled. Soon after, I saw the ATV coming and we were able to get all our equipment set up while the turtle dug her egg chamber. We were all set to put a GPS/satellite transmitter on her. We waited until she started laying eggs and then sprang into action. Chris attached the harness while I tagged her and wrote notes. With the harness attached, we made sure it was the right size before we attached the transmitter platform and then adjusted that. She was just beginning to cover her nest and move around a bit. The harness looked good and the transmitter was beeping, signaling us that it was collecting a data point. This was the first time we've been able to put a transmitter on a turtle in the daylight, and that was a big help. The turtle, who we've named Aurora, finished covering her nest and headed back to the water. She'd been on the beach just about an hour and a half. Chris snapped a lot of pictures of the harness straps, and the transmitter attachment. A photo opportunity like this is extremely rare and a few early walkers ran home to get their own cameras.
Away Aurora went, coming up frequently for a breath. At 4 am tonight, we should get an email from her with some early data points telling us where she spent the day. And now it's the beginning of another day for us. more in the morning.
