  • Bootes

Last night Sara and I came across a turtle as she was just finishing up her nest in MacArthur Park. I checked her tags and then checked the list of turtles to see who she was. Wow, I checked the tags once again and had Sara check the sheets this time. The tag number belonged to Bootes! "Are you sure" I said as I checked her PIT tag. We double checked and verified that it was actually Bootes. We have been waiting for her to return for 4 years now! You are probably wondering what is so special about her?? In 2002 we deployed our first three satellite transmitters on our nesting turtles - Aries, Sandy and Bootes. If you have been keeping up with the project for a while, you will remember that Sandy was found dead on a beach in New Jersey on October 12th 2002 after being tracked from Juno beach to new jersey. A press release can be found here Aries and Bootes had not been seen since that season. We stopped receiving transmissions from Bootes after about two months and were worried about her fate (especially after what had happened to Sandy) Last night she looked great! Not a scratch on her and she even grew a bit since we saw her last. Here is an article with an image of Bootes (and me looking like an idiot!) Fathoms magazine We also spotted another nesting turtle on Singer Island. This one was a new turtle and she was rather tiny. At 134 centimeters curved carapace length she is bringing the average size of all our nesting turtles down. Not much else to report other than the rough surf and salty air. It makes the night really long and the ATV ride is a tough one. Hopefully it will die down a bit today.

well, let's see, what is new? right now is the down-time for the season, when nests are dug up and inventoried, and final reports are written. this is what we are working on at the moment. as well, we are planning next season already, trying to get some funding to cover expenses like travel, housing and equipment. I will try to post more regularly than I have been and we should be making some additions and changes to the website over the next few months as well. as Chris mentioned on his maps page, we are no longer tracking Sandy, which is very sad news as we had all become attached to her. it is most likely that her transmitter malfunctioned for some reason, and we will have to wait until the 2004 season before we see her again - but we look forward to that. so we are only left with Aries, (we lost Bootes transmissions in July) and she seems to be hanging around South Carolina these days. I will be on again soon, I will try to post each Monday. we would be happy to hear comments on the site or the season - email info@floridaleatherbacks.com

with the kind of nights we have been having lately, none of us were too eager to get out on the beach. it poured rain this evening, record amounts - and it didn't stop until about 930 pm. we hung around at my house until we decided we better make a pass or two, since it had cleared up and was looking like a really nice evening, warmer than the past few. we started at our usual places, Chris and Niki on the gator on the south end and Jeremy and I in the car on the north half of the beach. first two stops for us, nothing. then I spotted what looked like a leatherback far away down the beach, between the Marinelife Center and the Juno Pier. we drove down to the next crossover and looked again, it was just slightly south of us, and it looked big. from the steps closest to the turtle, she looked huge and Jeremy said "It's Bootes." it looked like it was wearing the backpack. from her satellite tracks, Bootes had been looking like she might head down this way again. we ran out onto the beach and looked through the night vision scope. Definitely the turtle had a backpack! we could see the harness and the little light blinking on top. quickly Jeremy and I made a quick pass of the rest of our section of beach, scoping at each crossover until we were sure that the beach was clear of other turtles. then we raced back to the turtle, having left her while she was digging her egg chamber. on the way, I called Chris and Niki to tell them about our find. squeals from the other end of the phone, Niki was pretty excited and they rushed to join us. Chris had his sisters Samantha and Melanie and friends along and they all headed our way.

Jeremy and I approached the turtle carefully once we were sure she was dropping eggs. we looked at her satellite tag and the number written on the front of it and my heart skipped. "Jeremy," I said, "It's Sandy." it really was her. we had not seen her since we put the satellite tag on. we never expected to see her again (at least for 2 years at a minimum). we were so excited, we just kept grinning. I called Chris and Niki back and said "It's Sandy!" they were only a short distance away. when they arrived, we carefully checked her entire harness and made a few adjustments so she would be more comfortable with the harness, but mostly it looked good. there were already tiny barnacles growing attached to the nylon straps. she looked good and we were all so glad to see her again. we watched her finish nesting and crawl down to the water where she disappeared into the waves. perhaps she will be back again in 9 or 10 days.

I really thought she was finished for the season, but it is possible that she did nest again 9 or 10 days ago, just not on our surveyed beach. however, that seems unlikely since she has been so faithful to our beach. as we were standing there, Chris realized that she has emerged at least 3 times within 500 yards of the Juno pier, a feat that seems incredible since now we know she travels to Cape Canaveral between nests. but as we only get positions every two days (the transmitter is on one day, then off the next to save batteries), it is possible that she nested on a night when her transmitter was on an off cycle and it only looked like she had gotten close to the beach but did not come ashore. that seems to be the best explanation now. we will talk to other morning beach crews along the coast to see if they had any nests around the time she should have been nesting.

after watching Sandy leave, we went our separate ways again to make a few more passes of the beach. nothing else out there tonight, but Sandy really was enough for all of us, what a great surprise...

still no Sandy. she may have finished nesting for the season. we looked all night for her with no luck. we did however tag one new turtle on Singer Island about 1130 pm, our 41st of the season (she will be Merope, one of the Pleides constellation stars). Chris got an update on where the satellite transmitter turtles are, he called me at 230 am with the latest. Sandy apparently was still 35 miles north of Juno Beach last night, and so it was possible that she would still show up to nest. I guess Aries nested last night up on Hutchinson Island, which is about 45 miles north of Juno. we received a good satellite transmission that she was on land. and Bootes has booted it back up to Cape Canaveral after nesting the other night here. we will be updating our tracking map soon.

ok, that's a bit better! I just could not stay awake for another second last night. we had an exciting night, filled with expectation. we got out there early, Chris and Niki covered the south half, and Jeremy and I the north half of the beach. we were on the lookout for the profile of a leatherback with a square extension up on the middle ridge - the satellite backpack. nothing until about 1 am, Niki called me to say they had a turtle and Chris was checking it out, it was up the beach a bit. "Chris is calling me - I'll call you back". and then from Niki I got "It's got a backpack!" it was Bootes. she was nesting about 2 and a half miles south of where she nested 9 nights ago, in the turtle hotspot in Lost Tree (south part of Juno Beach). since she has spent the last 8 days up off Cape Canaveral, it is a pretty impressive feat to come back and nest that closely to her previous nest. the harness on Bootes looked good and the transmitter was holding in place well. Chris and Niki checked for any signs of wear or stress on the attachment and on the turtle. all good.

the search for Sandy was on. as we usually have turtles on the beach at the same time when we have multiple turtles both teams took a quick tour of the beach, scouting for Sandy. from her satellite tracks, she had been pretty close to Bootes the whole 9 days and she is also a 9-day nester ------------------nothing on our next pass.

finally, about 215 am, I spotted a large black turtle nesting just south of one of the Jupiter beach crossovers. hurriedly, we got closer so I could see if she was satellite equipped, but her ridges were clear. she was a new turtle, our 40th of the season! Jeremy did the tags, and we measured her (153 cm curved carapace length). she had lots of white spots on her head and front flippers, and barnacles on her carapace. all flippers intact.

we kept surveying until dawn. still no Sandy. perhaps she had gone back to being a 10-day nester - she did that at the beginning of the season.

we got updated tracks this morning from UCF and Hubbs SeaWorld. looks like Sandy and Aries were both about 60 miles north of Juno last night, and still on a southward journey, so tonight will be another expectant night. we had no idea how many days apart Aries has nested this season, since we have only seen her twice, but Sandy looks to be back onto a 10-day internesting interval. having satellite transmitters on the turtles makes things a little less puzzling when we don't see turtles at the times we expect to. tonight should be great!

notes from the past couple nights - Wednesday night there were no leatherbacks. Tuesday night was Chris and Niki's busy night and the fourth turtle that I reported possibly being a new turtle was actually Capella. so they had 3 returning turtles (Ixchel, Ara, Capella) and one new one that night.

we'll let you know who we see overnight tonight...

news from last night, I was not working so had to wait until this morning to find out the scoop. Chris and Niki had a really busy night. they spotted Ixchel (her fifth nest that we have recorded), Ara (her second), a new turtle, and possibly a fourth new turtle (Niki's phone died during a call - will update tonight). we just got some new tracks from our satellite turtles. Aries is hanging out near Titusville, and Sandy and Bootes are heading south (currently off Melbourne). looks like they may be getting ready to nest (as we thought they might) in the next couple days. keep checking the tracking page for updates...

sorry there was no update this morning. I just kind of fell into bed. it was an extremely quiet night, terribly buggy, and very still. it was warm too, and no turtles at all (leatherbacks I mean). it is going to be a busy weekend, so we will be rested and ready. Chris and Niki are out there tonight, and hopefully will see one of our turtles. we will be expecting Sandy and Bootes on Thursday night and Aries on Friday night. stay tuned...
