  • salty night

Last night was warm, salty and leatherbacky. We found two turtles last night on the north end of the survey area. I came across Magdalena at around midnight and then found Bunny at the popular leatherback nesting time of 4AM. Kelly and Robbin Trindell (Florida FWC)rode the south end of the beach and watched quite a few loggerheads nesting but did not find any leatherbacks. Kelly and Robbin took a trip up north to see Magdalena finish her nest and crawl to the water.

We are back out there tonight and will be deploying PAT transmitters with folks from NOAA Fisheries Service on two nesting leatherbacks. We will post more information about the PAT transmitters in the next few days.

  • Best Laid Plans . . .

It was a gorgeous night on the beach; the seas were like glass. We thought Musca might be back with her transmitter, so Chris spent some time trying to get a signal from her.No luck.I offered to do the second pass on the beach so Chris could catch up on some paper work.On the way back from Jupiter Inlet we got our first turtle of the night.I called Chris, who drove up in his car and accessed the beach through the Jupiter Beach Resort (the turtle was right out front). It was Pisces, last seen 3 times in 2002.She nested; we replaced missing tags, measured, and documented her injuries (all well healed). Now it was time to head home ? I have to quit early (2 a.m.) so I can get some sleep before my day job as Rehabilitation Specialist at the Marinelife Center.

As I cruised for home on the beach, there was a telltale dark, winding track and big black shadow; it was another turtle! This one was new to us, no tags at all.So I called Chris again ? and he headed back in his car to work her up.After watching her cover her nest for a while, we decided I really needed to head home before I turned into a pumpkin.

So off I went (hearing my pillow calling my name) and not 5 minutes later there was another turtle on the beach! This one had tags and it was Bunny the Easter turtle. She nested last year on Easter, April 11.At this point all I could do was call Chris and tell her where she was ? I was heading for pumpkin land very quickly! So I was a little late getting home but It was a great night on the beach ? who needs sleep anyway?!?

  • Sorry

Sorry about the missing post this morning. There were no turtles this on Saturday night. I had thought that "Bunny - the easter turtle" was going to make an appearance but nothing. There have been a few turtles up on Hutchinson Island over the last few days. Kelly and I are back out here tonight and are heading out on the beach right now. I feel lucky!

I went out early this morning to excavate a few nests that had hatched in MacArthur Park. Two of them were from turtles that we saw nesting. here are the results! the first nest I got to was Maya's. She nested on April 9th and this nest was her second one on our beach. It took her eggs 72 days to hatch, which is a bit longer than the average for leatherbacks on our beach at 66 days. Maya had a total of 58 yolked eggs and 48 spacers (of various sizes). Of the yolked eggs, 51 had hatched - pretty good success rate of 88%. Not all those that hatched got out of the nest though, I found 3 dead hatchlings in the nest and 2 live ones. So the nest had an overall emergence success of 79% (still fairly good).

the second nest I excavated was our Easter morning turtle, and that was Bunny. Although her eggs were laid on April 11th; they hatched also on June 20th, taking 70 days to incubate. Bunny had a much larger nest with 82 yolked eggs and 37 spacers. Only 9 were unhatched eggs, while 71 turtles had hatched, and 65 of those had emerged successfully (79% emergence success). In this nest, I found 1 dead hatchling, 3 live ones and 2 which were pipped and dead in their eggshells. I'll release all live hatchlings tonight when it gets dark. One of the 5 live hatchlings that I found was missing a rear flipper, and it looked like it had been taken off by a ghost crab. Often when a nest hatches, ghost crabs will dig burrows down to the eggs and see what they can find to eat. Since this little hatchling was stuck in some roots, he could not get away. Unfortunately this flipperless hatchling died shortly after I found him.

Maybe we'll add some pictures later on - have to get some off my camera.

a good night back at work again! The wind really picked up night before last and it blew all day today and into tonight. the waves were also picking up pretty well, and there was a lot of cloud around, which makes for a bright beach, due to urban glow. we heard today that there had been a nest down at Singer, near the inlet, but since we haven't been able to get there the past few days, we didn't get to see who it was. on my first pass the tide was pretty low so I thought I'd see if I could sneak it past the seawall and go down and GPS the nest, just in case it washed out with the high tides we'd be sure to have. I'd traveled nearly to the inlet, looking hard for the day-old track, when I saw a new track! then I looked up the beach and saw a turtle throwing sand around. it looked as though she was finishing up so I went up quickly and checked her for tags. yup. tagged. it was Bunny, our Easter morning turtle. I saw someone sitting on a nearby bench, just quietly watching the turtle nest in the dark. We talked a little about what the turtle was doing and the man told me that she'd been throwing sand for about half an hour - it was early yet, just 10:15 pm. Turned out that my turtle observer (a really nice man from England), had to move a large heavy wooden beach chair out of Bunny's way so she could get to the water. turtles don't see very well on the beach and she kept bumping into it. I told my new friend that if I found a new turtle tonight, I'd name it after his wife Beatrice.

I got the chance to do that a few hours later!! after having a break at the office, and eating a bunch of Cheetos that chris had just bought for me, I headed back down the beach and found a new turtle nesting just before MacArthur Park, in Lost Tree Village. so Beatrice it is! she was a good looking turtle, all flippers intact and she lay her nest nice and high up on the beach (as did Bunny, strangely enough). seems like we are having a good string of turtles here now...

  • early turtle tonight!

early turtle tonight!we suspected that it might happen this week. we had a wonderful party before work tonight, lots of friends in attendance, and we have Buddy and Marjorie visiting from NC - they'll be volunteering this week with us. we grilled some food, drank some wine and were getting all caught up with each others stories, when we realized we'd better get out there. Shana called me at 930 to tell me she already had a turtle on the beach way up north. and the turtle was already covering her nest! so as we had been sitting at the Marinelife Center just hanging about, Bunny had come up onto the beach (probably about 830). it was high tide at 9 pm tonight and that's exactly when she was laying her eggs. I looked at her data sheet from 9 days ago, and at 128 she was laying eggs, 130 was high tide. it's pretty cool when it works out like that, but it doesn't always. Buddy and Marjorie left their post on Singer Island to try to see Bunny, but they missed seeing her - they made it just as Bunny (a name that is somehow not as funny as it was 9 days ago, but we still like it!) was slipping into the water. the rest of the night, the tide just went down and we kept surveying - ever hopeful. after about midnight we thought that probably the leatherback window had closed, and we were right. gorgeous night though, I kept lying back on my ATV when I was at the inlet and watching the progression of Scorpio and other constellations as they moved across the sky. I also saw a few shooting stars and the temperature came up nicely as the night progressed. we'll be looking for an early-ish turtle again tonight. until then... night night.

easter bunny.jpgI think we just missed seeing the Easter Bunny! We got back from the beach for a break and there were Cadbury Easter Eggs everywhere around the door. mmm.. chocolate sugar high at 4 am - this will keep us going for the rest of the night - thanks Bunny! we had one new turtle tonight. she was half way up the beach when I found her in MacArthur Park at 1245 am. I quickly checked the rest of my section of beach before coming back to tag her. she was right up next to the dune and nearly ready to lay eggs when I arrived back. she was a smallish turtle, and one of the greasy ones. we have noticed that there are two types of leatherback turtles nesting here. they can be either A. big females, with smooth speckled skin and hardly any barnacles, or B. small and dark (not many white spots) with a heavy barnacle load, and greasy, fishy smelling skin. we think that the two types of turtles are spending time in different habitats before coming to nest and we are working on ways to try to figure this out. so... we have been sitting here now for half an hour thinking about what to name this turtle, and after we've eaten probably too many of these Easter eggs, Chris has come up with the name "Bunny" for the turtle. we seem to find this hilarious and seeing as it's nearly 5 am, this seems like a good idea to me and a good way to end our evening... more tomorrow.
