  • Cold and busy!

    Last night was another cold one with the temperature dropping into the 40's once again. The turtles didn't seem to mind. I saw 4 of them! The first leatherback arrived at about 1:30am near the Jupiter Reef Club. I really wasn't expecting to come across her in the cold and I had to do a double take when I first saw her track. I had to laugh when I checked her tags. It was "Windy" a turtle that Kelly and I tagged on another very cold night back during the 2003 season. I wonder where her friend "Icy" is? On my way back down the beach, I spotted another turtle. This was a new untagged turtle and was in kind of a bad mood throwing cold dry sand in my face! I quickly tagged her and and headed down the beach. I decided to name her "Cleopatra" - a name suggested by a blog reader in England! I was able to take a run down to the Lake Worth Inlet while the tide was low and on my way back to the office to warm up I came across another turtle nesting in MacArthur Park. This one was a turtle we saw only once last year and was nesting again this season! I sat with her for a while and watched her cover her nest before deciding it was too cold to be outside anymore. I headed north once again to warm up with some hot coffee. I didn't get very far before I spotted another track up the beach! The turtle was all the way up near the dune and was facing the water. I love it when they do that! It was really dark at this spot, but I tried to take a picture to show the view. She looked sort of majestic laying on a big rise in the sand looking back out to see as Venus was rising over the water. She was a BIG turtle and one that we have not seen in quite some time. "Jupiter" was the first turtle observed during the 2002 season and has not been seen since. She must be living right, because she was FAT! I guess that is kinda rude, but she looked like she was going to bust out of her carapace! What a night! This morning, the swell was still pushing the water up the beach and made the morning run very hard. The beach is blocked from the ATV in a few spots and is covered in water in other locations. Hopefully it will die down a bit today and maybe even warm up a bit!

    a really cool night last night, and the wind was kicking out of the northeast, bringing big wind swells that carried all the yucky rotting seaweed up much higher on the beach. this should be good for the next few nights, we'll have a clearer path in front of us. now the loggerheads are starting to become a common sight. we had just one turtle last night. I found her on Singer Island near Ocean Mall at 2:52 am. it turned out to be Icy, which seemed appropriate! that's all we've got for today, should be a beautiful weekend, after nearly a week of rain, and we're expecting a couple of our GPS turtles tonight or tomorrow night, so I'm sure we'll be posting at least about them, and any others we find. enjoy the sunny weekend - I certainly plan to :)

  • Icy shows up…

    We were all geared up for a busy night tonight, and we hoped Molly would make an appearance ? she?s been gone for 10 nights so she is due back ? the latest data points we?ve got from her transmitter put her just north of here, near Hobe Sound National Wildlife Refuge. I got started just before 10 and had stopped at the top of our ATV ramp to take a look through the night vision scope. I could already see a turtle! Just north of the bottom of the ramp. I called Chris to come and meet me. It turned out to be Icy ? and we?d been expecting her as we first saw her in late March 2003. She?d only lost one tag from one of her rear flippers. I hurried on, thinking with it being just past high tide, there was a good chance that another turtle would be on the beach. But all was quiet. When I got back to Icy, Chris and Sandy had given her a replacement tag and she was finishing up her nest. Niki had called from Hutchinson ? she?d had a new turtle up there tonight ? she?d tagged her and named her Taylor. From then, the tide just continued to go out and the night became quite cool. Hardly any waves now that the storm has passed so it was quiet and a bit spooky. But a 2 turtle night ? not bad! We?ve now identified 18 individual turtles on our 2 study areas ? for comparison last year we only saw 35 individuals all season. I think we are definitely in for a good one?.

  • Cold, cold, cold

    It was a cold night out there! The weather station at the Marinelife Center recorded a low temperature of 53 degrees but it felt a whole lot colder on the beach. The leatherbacks that nested last night must have been freezing. We encountered a tagged turtle here on Juno and Niki and Gwen found a turtle they tagged 10 days ago. "Stewart" was found at about 4am last night digging an egg chamber near the bluffs neighborhood. Since "Stewart" has been nesting on our survey area since 2001 we decided she would be a great candidate for satellite transmitter. Kelly and I fitted her with her transmitter and she crawled down the beach into the water. She seemed rather slow on the beach and it was probably due to the cold temperature. We now have three turtles equipped with transmitters and will be posting a few maps of their movements in the next few days. The forecast is for another cold night. Maybe we will find Windy or Icy tonight?!

    It was a beautiful night. Just as we started out, the moon rose above the horizon looking like a big fiery orange ball. Chris and I headed north from the Park on the gator. A call from Shana confirmed the arrival of the first loggerhead on Juno Beach. She told us to continue north since she was detained with the turtle. We motored up the beach, expecting to see a loggerhead, when Chris yelled, "Stop!". There was a leatherback, nesting 100 meters away, with her carapace facing us, disguised as a pile of sand. Once she started laying eggs, we discovered it was "Icy," a turtle Kelly tagged on March 31. She was a tough turtle, with lots of scars around her neck and shoulders, presumably from fishing line or rope. We will post a night-vision picture of her soon. The rest of the night was bright and breezy, but no more leatherbacks nested. Two more loggerheads nested on the southern portion of Juno Beach. Guess that means our nights will be busier from now on.

  • ‘Cold’ turtles

    the turtles from last night will be named Windy and Icy - with this cold front, we might have to come up with more 'cold' names for any turtles tonight. on Saturday night, Niki tagged her first turtle of the season - it'll be called Mola. on the audio below, we did our best to get the sound of the turtle carapace and front flipper squeaking as the turtle threw sand back over her nest, but the squeak doesn't really come through!
