  • They keep coming!

    The number of leatherback nests recorded along our entire survey area is now over 170 with more than 107 nests on Juno Beach alone! This season looks to be a record year.We have been spotting around 5 turtles a night for the past week or so and it has been a lot of fun out there. Many of the turtles we are encountering are new to our beach, but we are seeing a lot of our "old friends" One of the older girls is "Ikeya". She first nested during the 2002 season and she is pretty big - 168 centimeters long!Ikeya is interesting because she is tends to nest on the same nights each season (May 24th). She also has a wild habit of switching beaches between the south end of Juno Beach and Boca Raton which is more than 50 kilometers to the south. She has been spotted twice on Boca Raton beaches and three times along our beach. She is also one of the few turtles that has nested two years in a row. We should be coming up on the peak part of the season pretty soon, and I expect we will be very busy this coming week.Stay tuned!

  • One turtle

    A single leatherback visited the beach last night. She didn't arrive until about 2am, just as most of our guests gave up and headed to bed for the night.
    "Zhang" is a turtle that we tagged a few years ago while the bright comet Ikeya-Zhang (a few images here) shone in the early morning sky. We named two leatherback that season for the comet; Ikeya and Zhang and they have both been back to nest here on Juno several times.
    I like to scan the skies each morning for comets that are barely visible in the night scopes. There is currently comet that is barely visible in the early twilight hours each morning. In a few days it will be lost in the sunlight and will not be seen again for a long time. I don't think we will be naming any leatherback turtles "Comet 73P/Schwassmann Wachmann 3" this season! but if you have any good names for new turtles, leave them in the comments.

    There were a few turtles last night, but none on our stretch of beach. (see audio post below) Ikeya was first observed nesting on Juno Beach during the 2002 season. We had not seen her since then and were lucky enough to be called by the fine folks at Gumbo Limbo nature center in Boca Raton who found her nesting last night in Spanish River Park - almost 60 kilometers from where she nested in 2002. Niki scooted over to check, measure and take a look at her. Niki reported that she was very big at around 165 centimeters making her one of our largest girls! This recapture combined with the turtle Jeanette Wyneken witnessed the other night add greatly to our dataset! I guess our we picked the right website address FLORIDAleatherbacks.com. These turtles are Florida leatherbacks and they are likely using a large portion of the coastline to nest!


    On a much sadder note.... I witnessed a Loggerhead trying to nest last night up near the Jupiter Inlet. I noticed she had a large cut on her carapace and upon closer inspection discovered that she had been hit by a boat very recently. Maybe even in the last day or so! She was covered with the unmistakable blue bottom paint from a boat with a large bleeding crack just above her lungs. I think that her right lung may have been punctured making her prognosis not very good. I tried to restrain her on the beach, but there was no way I could have kept her. She had recently had a very bad run-in with humans, and did not want anything to do with me! I will consult our vets this morning and see if there is anything we can do for this turtle if she happens to try and nest again tonight.

    Our team has had a fantastic week! For the past 5 nights, we have tagged one turtle per night. The first four were new ones and got new tags from us. The turtle we saw last night (Sandy) was our first tag return and she nested 10 days ago on Jupiter beach. Last night she nested about four miles away from her first nest. Hopefully we will see her a few times again this season, so we can collect more specific information about the number of times she nests in a season, how successful her nests are, and how site specific she is (is she aiming for our beach or just a beach somewhere along South Florida?). These are the names of the turtles we have encountered so far this season. The project leader spotting and tagging the turtle chooses the name! Tagged turtles: Jupiter: tagged March 24 (our first turtle found on Jupiter beach) Aries: tagged April 7 Sandy: tagged April 9 Ikeya: tagged April 15 (named for the comet visible at 4 am) Ixchel: tagged April 16 (Shaleyla was with us from Peru and named this turtle for the Mayan goddess of fertility) Scorpio: tagged April 17 (constellation was prominent in the sky at 12:30 am) Grace: tagged April 18 Sandy returns April 19 Nest Totals (18): Jupiter/Carlin -1 , Juno Beach - 10 , MacArthur Park/Singer Island - 7
