  • Juno’s Beach

    Yep, that's right I said Juno's beach. Juno is a large leatherback that has been nesting on Juno Beach since we started the project in 2001. I spotted her late last night at about 3am when she was nesting along a narrow section of beach near Marcinski Road. I was excited to see that her tags we placed them a long time ago. When she was first spotted nesting by kelly and I in 2001, she had injured her flipper on a piece of wood in the dune. Since that night her wound has healed almost perfectly, and she looks great.These next few nights have historically been pretty good for spotting turtles and I feel good about tonight. I bet we find three!

  • got to be the peak!

    we had another 3 turtles last night, including a new one with some major problems... more on that in a minute. finally the weather held through the night, we didn't have to dodge lightning storms and torrential rains (although those have also been plaguing Chris on morning surveys). and it's a good bit cooler as well. tide was way out to start so we imagined it would be a slow start to the evening. it wasn't until about 1 am that I called Chris to see what was going on up north. he had just finished tagging what we think is our largest leatherback ever, at 174 cm curved carapace length. that's a real giant for Juno Beach (our average is 151 cm). and this turtle (named Nerita) had been hit by a big boat quite recently. she had prop wounds all over her carapace and her rear flippers. they seemed to be healing over ok, but what won't heal are the cuts to one of her front flippers. finally we have some idea of how some of our turtles end up with half a flipper. Nerita had been hit by a prop directly across her flipper, severing it nearly halfway down from her shoulder. but the cut was not complete and she now has a dangling piece of flipper that is being held on by one single finger bone. it probably won't last long in that state - Chris said he thought it was going to fall off while she was covering her nest. poor turtles have to put up with all kinds of injustice out there in the water... a little while later, I found Pisces (who I also found last night on Singer Island). I thought she'd nested last night (although she'd been rather quick on the beach) but tonight she actually laid eggs! I found her as she was getting ready to dig her egg chamber and she was sounding a bit frustrated (lots of grunts and groans and snorts). she'd managed to get herself to the dune - which is a reconstructed dune from the hurricanes last year. the dune had been replanted with small sea grape trees but Pisces was tearing those out and flinging them back over her shoulders! she was determined to nest in the base of that dune, although the sand seemed to be a bit more fine and heavy than normal beach sand - she did eventually dig down to some good sand though. Our last turtle of the night was Juno - think we've seen her 6 times now - Chris found her nesting up in Carlin Park. we're hoping for a couple new ones tonight as well. we're now in the middle of the peak nesting period, after the next couple weeks, nesting will drop off quite rapidly and the turtles will all head north for the summer months...
