    We've seen quite a few more turtles over the past few nights. We're starting to see several turtles that we've already seen this season. Katabatik, Helen, Kathleen and Lucy have returned over the past three nights. Each has been seen once already this year. We've also had two new turtles. Melanie - named after Andrew's cousin - nested on Tuesday night. Kitty - named after Rebeccah's mom - nested last night just south of the LMC. We've also seen two turtles over the past couple nights that were tagged in previous years that have not been here yet this year. It seems that we're getting a very good mix of turtles lately. We've now seen 38 individuals since we started surveying. 19 turtles were tagged in previous years, 19 were new this year. This is about average. Over the past few years about half of the turtles that we've seen are new. The entire crew is very happy to be keeping so busy out there with turtles!

  • They are still around!

    Well, last night I was out once again - just try to keep me away from the beach! I had a nice night out there chatting with people most of the night and enjoying the light breeze off the ocean. I encountered a nesting leatherback at about 1am on Juno Beach in front of one of the condominiums south of Loggerhead Park. The turtle was Lucy and she has been here a few times already this season. I imagine this will be her last nest before she heads up north for the rest of the summer.
    There was also another turtle that nested on the south end of the beach, but as usual they both nested at the same time and I did not get to see which turtle it was. Oh well!
    Back out there tonight and will post more in the AM.

  • Lots of people

    There were tons of people on the beach last night enjoying the cool air and flat ocean. I bet that I counted more than 100 people on the north section of the beach at one point during the night!
    We did encounter a single leatherback as she was completing her nest up near Carlin Park in Jupiter. The turtle was "Lucy" and she is a girl that has been nesting on our beach since (at least) 2001. We enjoyed watching her as she slipped into the calm ocean at about 1:30am.
    The loggerheads have been coming up pretty good so far on the south end of the beach. Sara and I checked most of them for tags and injuries last night as they finished up laying their eggs. We were lucky enough to observe a loggerhead with the biggest head I have ever seen on a nesting female! This girl had a cranium larger than a basketball! If you have ever visited the Loggerhead Marinelife Center you probably have checked out the large skull from an adult male loggerhead. If not, check it out - because the turtle last night had a head the same size or even larger!! This morning on the last survey, I saw lots of dolphins playing in the surf just as the sun oozed out of the sea. It was a really pretty sunrise nice end to an enjoyable night.

    we've pretty much decided that the best way to get a leatherback to return to your beach to nest is NOT to name it! we had another 2001 recapture tonight, and once again, we had not given her a name. she's the 6th turtle from 2001. she came up right about 1230 am on Juno Beach. I recognized her from her flipper tags and she also had a tiny hole in her left rear flipper that we had noticed before. once I looked more closely at her, she seemed familiar. we tagged her on June 1, 2001 with the full set of tags - flipper and PIT tag. but when I scanned her shoulder to confirm her PIT tag number, the scanner did not beep as it usually does when it detects the embedded tag. it's been documented in other places that occasionally the PIT tag migrates under the skin or sometimes pops back out again, and is lost. this is what must have happened, so we gave her a new one. she'd grown very little in the 2 years since she's been gone.

    we had Debbie Sobel (Sea Turtle Conservation League of Singer Island)out with us tonight, and David Arnold was out again too. Debbie has named our recapture Lucy. thanks for all your help, you guys. and..... I am off tonight - yippee! - so Chris and Niki will post results from Friday night's survey.
