  • quiet night

It was a pretty quiet night out there with only one nesting leatherback. Navi was found just as she was digging her egg chamber near the Juno Beach fishing pier. There were also quite a few greens and loggerheads nesting between the giant scarps that had formed a few days ago. Curiously, our scanner here in the office has been beeping with the familiar sounds of Argos satellite transmisons since late last night. The interesting thing about it, is that we do not have any turtles with transmitters in the area?! The signal could be coming from anything with an argos transmitter like a bird, manatee, green sea turtle or even an offshore buoy. We are going to investigate the signal a bit more and see if we can figure out where it is coming from. More later.

  • 3 more…

another really fun night out there on the beach! 3 turtles do keep you busy. we were delayed a little bit by rain again last night, but it cleared up about 10 pm and we had cloudy skies after that, with just a few sprinkles. tide was going out until about 12:30 but as soon as it turned, I expected we'd get our first turtle. I was the first to see a false crawl on Singer Island (had Ranger Rob out with me) about 1 am. we didn't get to see the turtle but I figured she'd be back shortly. we ran up the beach just to check that there were no others, and Chris came down to cover part of the south beach. around 2:25 am, I got my turtle! she'd come up about 20 m from the false crawl and she was already laying eggs when I found her. I checked her tags and it turned out to be Stella. she's a big one! at 163 cm - same length as my height! I called Chris to tell him the news and he told me he'd had a turtle too - Navi - both Stella and Navi nested 9 days ago. I finally got up to the office for the first time all night - I was in need of some coffee. Chris called again to tell me that he'd found a new turtle near the Jupiter Reef Club. she got the full work-up and a new set of tags (name to be announced). we finished up the night hoping that we might have a morning turtle, since high tide was at about 6 am... but we had nothing else. I'd like to order a few more for this evening as well...

  • I did not see a turtle

But I did hear one! I spent the night following "Amelie" down the beach along Hutchinson Island. Amelie has a transmitter attached to her that we are trying to remove before she heads off to northern waters. Satellite data put her location near the St. Lucie nuclear power plant in the evening and that is exactly where I located her! She was still swimming south, so I followed her until about 4:30 am driving south along the road. It was amazing to see the effects of hurricane Frances and Jeanne near the north end of the island. The beach was changed dramatically with NO vegetation along most of the beach. Amelie did not nest last night so we will be back out there again tonight. I have been recording some audio from the search and will post it here in a few days. As I was following Amelie up north Sandy and Kelly were busy down south with a few turtles. I believe there were three in total. Navi, Deneen and a new turtle which Sandy named Stella. Niki was helping out Jeanette Wyneken and Christie Whelan on Jensen Beach last night and found one turtle which they named Nora. There is a terrible story to be told about her and we are waiting for Jeanette to write a bit and send us a photo to post. Click here for more information. Time for bed!

  • Aurelia the moon jelly

Just the one turtle last night, she arrived around 12:25 am. I found her on Singer Island, very near to where Navi and Clover nested on our 2 previous nights. There certainly seem to be leatherback hotspots this year, more than usual. it seems the beaches are still adjusting to all the changes in the past year with the hurricanes and storms. a lot of sand transport processes going on. in any case, Aurelia is a turtle that we first tagged in 2003, and we saw her only one time. I was able to take a genetic sample from her (we didn't have one) and I had to give her a new flipper tag on her left rear flipper as she'd lost that one. She was away back into the water by 1:15 am. Tonight was considerably warmer than the previous night, but still cool, and the wind really picked up around 5:45 am as we were finishing up. We'd hoped to see Stewart and Musca (2 of our GPS turtles) last night as we'd had satellite data from them to say they were in the area, but it now seems they've moved on. we'll see if we get any GPS points from them today, to see if they did nest on another beach...

  • a long wait for a turtle…

A beautiful full moon and cool weather greeted us as we began our survey tonight. with high tide at 9 pm, there was the possibility of an early turtle but our first passes revealed nothing - except a short false crawl down on Singer Island - one of those frustrating semi-circles right at the tide line. we met up with some friends at the office, including folks from the National Save the Sea Turtle Foundation (supporters of our GPS study), and chatted a while. it rained briefly around 2 am (cold front passing over) and then we headed out once again. Volunteer Vivien joined me and we went down to the inlet, arriving around 3:15 am. I was feeling a little sleepy so I took a quick nap, with my head ridiculously cradled on the steering wheel of the Gator (it's amazing where one can catch a few short minutes of sleep). at 4:10 am we decided we'd better head back. it had become quite cold. a little way up the beach, we found what we'd been hoping for all night long. a track winding up the beach... and the turtle had just begun to cover her nest. It was Navi, first seen in 2003. we thought it was probably Navi that had false crawled earlier. we continued on - after I spoke to chris and he told me that Niki had a turtle (Carla) up on Hutchinson - we thought we may have more too. sure enough, about 3 km later we came across Ursa in MacArthur Beach State Park - she'd been seen there by chris 11 nights ago. that was it for us, a long wait but happy results. chris spent the final couple hours of the night with the vhf receiver, trying to hear where Musca is - her latest satellite position had put her right off Juno Beach and chris could hear the vhf beeping, indicating she was in the area. she is due to nest on Tuesday night, but you never know, she might be early...

very humid and salty on the beach tonight. all the excitement of the afternoon turtle must have worn me out, I had to have several power naps during the night. Chris covered the north beach and I was patrolling the south. thought we might see a few turtles but about midnight it got suddenly colder. then about 150 am I spotted a new turtle just finishing up her egg chamber. she was an average size nester (about 154 cm) and was an expert digger. tonight was the first night this season that I have seen the constellation Cassiopeia so have decided to call the turtle Navi, one of the stars in that cluster. managed to make it through the night...
