  • got to be the peak!

we had another 3 turtles last night, including a new one with some major problems... more on that in a minute. finally the weather held through the night, we didn't have to dodge lightning storms and torrential rains (although those have also been plaguing Chris on morning surveys). and it's a good bit cooler as well. tide was way out to start so we imagined it would be a slow start to the evening. it wasn't until about 1 am that I called Chris to see what was going on up north. he had just finished tagging what we think is our largest leatherback ever, at 174 cm curved carapace length. that's a real giant for Juno Beach (our average is 151 cm). and this turtle (named Nerita) had been hit by a big boat quite recently. she had prop wounds all over her carapace and her rear flippers. they seemed to be healing over ok, but what won't heal are the cuts to one of her front flippers. finally we have some idea of how some of our turtles end up with half a flipper. Nerita had been hit by a prop directly across her flipper, severing it nearly halfway down from her shoulder. but the cut was not complete and she now has a dangling piece of flipper that is being held on by one single finger bone. it probably won't last long in that state - Chris said he thought it was going to fall off while she was covering her nest. poor turtles have to put up with all kinds of injustice out there in the water... a little while later, I found Pisces (who I also found last night on Singer Island). I thought she'd nested last night (although she'd been rather quick on the beach) but tonight she actually laid eggs! I found her as she was getting ready to dig her egg chamber and she was sounding a bit frustrated (lots of grunts and groans and snorts). she'd managed to get herself to the dune - which is a reconstructed dune from the hurricanes last year. the dune had been replanted with small sea grape trees but Pisces was tearing those out and flinging them back over her shoulders! she was determined to nest in the base of that dune, although the sand seemed to be a bit more fine and heavy than normal beach sand - she did eventually dig down to some good sand though. Our last turtle of the night was Juno - think we've seen her 6 times now - Chris found her nesting up in Carlin Park. we're hoping for a couple new ones tonight as well. we're now in the middle of the peak nesting period, after the next couple weeks, nesting will drop off quite rapidly and the turtles will all head north for the summer months...

  • Funny image

Last night I saw a loggerhead turtle crawling up the beach right up a leatherback track from a few nights ago. The size difference amused me and reminded me of the people I meet at night on the beach that have never seen a leatherback turtle on the beach. They always tell me that they just saw a "huge" turtle. I ask them where and proceed up the beach only to find a relatively small loggerhead. The funniest thing about the loggerhead last night was that it nested right on top of the leatherback nest. The little loggerhead looked as if she was nesting on a big white fluffy bed that had been turned down by the leatherback, the two stakes used to mark the leatherback nest forming the bedposts! On the leatherback front: We saw three leatherbacks last night! I found Veronica and Juno nesting nesting on the north section of beach and Kelly found Pisces down on the south end.

  • extreme frost

it was so cold last night on the beach but the turtles kept us running all night long. it was one of our best nights ever - and we've had 2 of these this week! around 10:30 pm I found a turtle near the Seminole golf club, she had a PIT tag but no flipper tags (that I saw). but her tag did not match any of the turtles on our list, so we'll have to do some sleuthing to see where she was first tagged (we already checked with UCF, and she's not theirs). then I found 2 false crawls down south, which always makes you think that a turtle is just about to pop out of the water so I waited a while. on my way back up north at nearly exactly the same spot as where Navi nested last night on Singer Island, I found Clover (first time since 2003). she's missing almost her whole left rear flipper and lays a very shallow nest. I continued on and got back to where I'd left the unknown turtle with Chris (he later named her Rikki). Once again at the golf course was a turtle - Pisces! I called Chris to share the news and he said that he had just tagged a new turtle up at the inlet - he's named her Verna - from our list of names from a few days ago submitted by our readers. after 4 turtles in 40 degree weather, we had to take a break, warm up and have some coffee. At 4 we went back out again and I hadn't gone far south before I found Juno, nesting up in the sea grapes. She was the last of our 5 turtles for the night, and Niki also found Gale up on Hutchinson. we really cannot believe this past week. Since last Monday, we've seen about 25 individual turtles - this week last year, we saw only 4 the entire week! we are really enjoying this....more news tonight.

  • Best Laid Plans . . .

It was a gorgeous night on the beach; the seas were like glass. We thought Musca might be back with her transmitter, so Chris spent some time trying to get a signal from her.No luck.I offered to do the second pass on the beach so Chris could catch up on some paper work.On the way back from Jupiter Inlet we got our first turtle of the night.I called Chris, who drove up in his car and accessed the beach through the Jupiter Beach Resort (the turtle was right out front). It was Pisces, last seen 3 times in 2002.She nested; we replaced missing tags, measured, and documented her injuries (all well healed). Now it was time to head home ? I have to quit early (2 a.m.) so I can get some sleep before my day job as Rehabilitation Specialist at the Marinelife Center.

As I cruised for home on the beach, there was a telltale dark, winding track and big black shadow; it was another turtle! This one was new to us, no tags at all.So I called Chris again ? and he headed back in his car to work her up.After watching her cover her nest for a while, we decided I really needed to head home before I turned into a pumpkin.

So off I went (hearing my pillow calling my name) and not 5 minutes later there was another turtle on the beach! This one had tags and it was Bunny the Easter turtle. She nested last year on Easter, April 11.At this point all I could do was call Chris and tell her where she was ? I was heading for pumpkin land very quickly! So I was a little late getting home but It was a great night on the beach ? who needs sleep anyway?!?

rain - again. the evening started out fine, clear (mostly) and not wet. we managed to get a few passes done of north and south halves of the beach, and around 1130 pm, Jeremy called to say he had a turtle down on Singer Island, a tagged one. he read out the PIT tag number to me and I looked it up on our ID sheet. Pisces I said - she was here 10 days ago or so. immediately after that call, it began to thunder and pour rain, right over our heads. we waited it out for a while but eventually had to give up. the lightning was just too dangerous and too close so we called it a night. still, one turtle is better than being skunked!

one of the nests on Singer Island from March 30th hatched last night - we will have the success information of that nest on Sunday, after it has been dug up and the empty eggshells counted. we don't know which turtle laid that nest, but it was likely one of our 43 turtles.

it is supposed to pour rain all day again today and tonight, a tropical storm is passing over Florida in the next 2 days, so we will see how much we can get done. glad this weather is coming at the end of our season. it is very frustrating. will keep you posted......

tonight was a good night on the beach, as usual. some kind of low pressure system must have been building offshore all day because the waves were up to 5 ft. it was really rough and high tide was much higher than usual and it didn't fall away as fast as it usually does. it was quiet tonight to begin with, even for greens and loggerheads nesting. but around 1030 pm, turtles started to show up and we got our first leatherback just after midnight in Lost Tree (south Juno). she was yet another new turtle (name: Shaula - one of the brightest stars), and a small one, but she had nice white spots and a clean carapace (no barnacles). Mark (my volunteer for the evening) and I did the tags and moved on with the survey. called Niki to tell her we had a turtle, and she called me back to tell me she had one too, at the site of the old Juno pier, Mercury Way. Pisces has made another appearance here! We continued on but saw no more. I did see another nest however, down on Singer Island and by the looks of the crawl in relation to what the tide was doing, she was on the beach at the same time as our other 2 turtles so there is no way we could have been down there too. there were lots of footprints around so hopefully if someone saw the turtle had tags they will call the Marinelife Center with the information.

it looks like Sandy is just hanging off the beach north of us. this is our latest information, and it looks like she is the only one of our 3 satellite transmitter turtles that did not nest one more time. but she did 6 nests that we know of, and soon she may take off for her foraging grounds for summer. wonder where that will be?

we are in a little early this morning, but have jobs to go to in a few hours....

  • 33 tagged turtles

just in from the beach. it is cold and blustery out there, a strong wind from the ENE. unless Chris spots a turtle within the next hour or so, we had only one tonight. Polaris returned and nested on south Juno Beach (Lost Tree). she first nested on our beach on May 8 but had not been seen since then. wonder where she has been - she's probably laid only one additional nest since we tagged her. last night we had one new turtle which Jeremy and I spotted at 145 am, and Chris and Niki tagged her (Lacerta is her name). then later on, they spotted Electra nesting - 10 days since we tagged her. she is a huge turtle, and a quick nester. we are now up to 33 tagged turtles, in the last week alone we have had 11 new turtles. Niki and Chris named some of the turtles they have tagged in the past few days. the morning nester will be Corona, the one Chris tagged on the 25th will be Alaska (named by Eleanor Fletcher's daughter), and Niki tagged another one the night of the 25th, it will be Metallah (which means head of the triangle - apparently she was pointy). think we are caught up to date with names, I never thought we would have to come up with so many, when this is a quieter year than last year. all the turtle summaries will be posted on the 2002 turtles link at the right, when we get a chance to update that page. we are starting to see some of our turtles show up again that we tagged early on. hope we get some more. if recent nesters return this week we might see Sandy, Caroli, Hydra, Spica, Pisces, Lynx, Bootes, and Caeli. plus there are always some surprises. until tomorrow at this time....
