but once again, we got a lot! 3 turtles nested in our survey area last night - again, all of them after 2 am. Lacerta was the first to be seen - we have not seen her since 2002. A little on the small side, she nested up near the dune in a patch of beach grass. her hatchlings may have a bit of a struggle to get out of there. next we came across Physalia, a great big turtle that we first saw in 2003. She's one of our biggest turtles and she laid a great full nest. while I waited on Physalia to note time of egg-laying and record her tags, chris took a quick trip up north and called me with some tag numbers to look up. that turtle ended up being Mola, another 2003 recapture. Mola must be having a few problems internally, as she only laid about a dozen yolkless eggs (sometimes called spacers). None of these will hatch, as they are not fertile. I think that may be it for the night, but Chris has gone north and I'm about to head home down south so there's a chance there is another one out there. we'll post a note if there is...we are quickly reaching our record of 65 individuals in a season - so far we have 44! we also found out tonight that a 2004 turtle (Rhoda) nested last night near Sebastian Inlet.

skunked again! this is getting to be a pattern we don't like! but since it's the end of the nesting season, it's not surprising, so it's ok. it rained most of the day here and was overcast when we started work. luckily we've missed any rain at night recently, and the worst we've had is a sprinkle. we were dreading the tide coming in tonight, because last night we got slapped around so much that we thought it might be worse tonight at 4 am. but around 3:30 am, I took a break and when I went back out, the tide had already turned and I could still see my tracks from the last pass. chris had noticed too on his section of beach that the tide had not come up as far as it did last night. so that was something nice - we could stay below high tide the whole time, and below the scarp (which is pretty high in some places again). the moon (what's left of it) came up around 3 am, and it made the beach much brighter. the ocean was quite calm tonight, no waves and no wind.

we do have some exciting news - one of our first nests has hatched! The nest that Rhoda lay on March 27th (the night my parents were here and got to see a leatherback) has hatched and in 3 days we will dig it up and see how many eggs Rhoda lay and how many hatchlings got out of the nest. With nests starting to hatch, we will want to be off the beach with our ATVs - we don't want to accidentally run over any little guys...so we'll be on for a few more days and then we'll call it a season. we do plan on posting on the Project Log every few days even after the season, and we'll let you know the details of that when we finish up next week.

It was a relatively quiet night - I only saw 4 people the entire night! The breeze was cool out of the north and it made driving sort of painful on the eyes. Only one Loggerhead was spotted on the south end of the survey area, but TWO leatherbacks were found. Ixchel, a turtle tagged during the 2002 season was spotted at around 2:30am on Juno Beach. An hour or so later a new turtle was found also on Juno and was tagged by Shana and I. She looked big to me ( they all do!) but was right around the avereage size for our turtles. She nested and was back in the water by about 5:30am.

We couldn't spot the comet this morning as it has dimmed rapidly. More turtles tonight? I think Rhoda is due back, and she has been a regular visitor.

I guess I get to post the update this morning.

It was a fun night for me - mainly because I was able to sleep pretty good yesterday. It is rather hard to teach your body to sleep during the day.... When I arrived to begin the night (with a few Krispy Kreme's for the gang) Kelly and Niki had already taken a run or two down the beach. On my first pass, I spotted our star turtle of the season! Rhoda was just about finished nesting when I came across her on the north end of the survey area. It is the third time we have observed her! A small group of kids were near the turtle and were suprised when they approached the turtle to see how large she was. They were following all the rules by staying away from her until I allowed them to get close. Leatherbacks are an endangered species and state and federal laws protect them when on the beach. If you encounter a live sea turtle on the beach, be sure to stay well behind her and observe from a distance.

  • A perfect 3 turtle night!

It was so cool. the moon had still not come up when we started so it was a bit dark, but after 930 or so it started to get brighter, and it was a lot warmer tonight (thank goodness). Then Chris called about 1030 to say that Rhoda had returned to nest (it seems funny typing my mother's name as a turtle..) up near Jupiter Inlet. then we took a little break as niki had arrived from Boca, bringing cookies for Chris's birthday at midnight (Happy Birthday cj!!). Once back on the beach, I drove south toward MacArthure Park, and up ahead of me I saw a dark line leading up from the surf. I looked to the west to see if it was just a shadow of a tree (as that has often tricked me), but there was no tree! then I could see the turtle moving around up near the dune. I quietly snuck up behind her (she had just started to lay eggs) and reached for her flipper, my hand touching metal. I recorded the numbers on the tags, then went back to my ATV to look them up. I was shocked when I saw that it was Kalindi - she'd just nested LAST June 7th. Generally leatherbacks nest every 2 years, although in some places like French Guiana, some turtles do nest every year. But this is a first for our project. we'd suspected that it happened but now we've got the proof! I double checked her tag numbers - just to be sure. I'd arrived down at the inlet when chris called and said 'what are you doing? I'm at a turtle!" It was Hillary - she'd been found by Nancy Mettee (one of our Marinelife Center vets). Hillary first nested in 2002. the tide is just on it's way back in now, and I think that's going to be all for tonight. but what a good one.

  • What a fun night!

What a fun night! We started the evening off with a dinner gathering at our good friend Andy's house. Kelly along with her parents, Niki Desjardin, Jeanette Wyneken, Mike Salmon, Denise and Marie joined for a nice Italian dinner to kick off the summer. After dinner, I headed out on the beach alone to survey for turtles. At around 12:30am I spotted a new turtle in Carlin Park. I tagged, measured and took a genetic biopsy sample from her and headed north a few hundred meters and found another turtle. It was "Georgia"! Georgia was first observed nesting during the 2002 season nesting on Jupiter beach - no more than 2 kilometers from where she was found tonight! "Georgia" is our biggest turtle (giant) at 168.0cm. I met up with Kelly, Niki and Kelly's parents at the first turtle and we named her Rhoda after Kelly's mom.
