    I guess I forgot to update the log yesterday. Sorry. On Monday night, I encountered "Kalindi" once again. She did not lay eggs this time either. Her tail has now become quite swollen and she seems to be struggling to lay eggs. I hope that she has not ingested plastic bags the way the turtle "Sara" did last season. Although Sara did eventually lay eggs after plastic was removed, none of them ever developed. We will see if Kalindi comes back to attempt another nest. Last night was rather pleasant on the beach. There was a bit of a cool front that passed and it created a pretty thunderstorm offshore that kept me entertained for most of the night. As you know from reading these posts over the past few years, I am a bit of a lightning photographer. I probably have 200 lightning images in my library and never tire of shooting thunderstorms! There was a new turtle encountered last night. I spotted her coming out of the water at about 2am near the marinelife center. She is our third smallest turtle measuring 132 centimeters. That is tiny for a leatherback! She will be named "Bernadette" in honor of a group of elementary school children at St. Bernadette School in Lancaster, Ohio. I kinda like the one turtle a night trend, but two a night would be more fun!

  • Sara returns!

    our first turtle of the night last night was Sara, and we were really glad to see her. if you remember, Sara is the turtle that we found with a lot of plastic plugging up her cloaca - and she was not able to nest on April 20th. Once Chris removed a football-sized amount of plastic bits that night, Sara just left the beach. So when I found a turtle at 11:10 pm, I excitedly called Chris to tell him it was Sara and he rushed down to meet me. We waited as she dug her egg chamber - it all seemed to be going well. Near the end of digging, a leatherback will put her flipper in the hole to dig, but once she's ready to lay eggs, she'll slowly pull that flipper up just halfway, so it is concealing the egg chamber. Shortly afterwards, eggs will start to come out. We both stared into the hole expectantly. we heard the sounds that eggs make falling into the egg chamber and we slapped our hands in a high five! she was laying eggs! but when we looked into the egg chamber, things were still a little bit strange. Sara had laid about 6 eggs, but alongside those were 2 unshelled eggs - just the yolks! we were quite surprised as we've never ever seen this before. Sara laid about 30 spacers as well and then covered up her nest. we doubt that this nest will hatch but perhaps this is the first time she's tried laying eggs since the plastic incident, or maybe she has some permanent damage. only time will tell - if we see her again. we will hope for the best. after that it was pretty quiet, there was a huge swell coming in from somewhere that prevented me from getting down through MacArthur Park (the erosion is still very bad at one place). Once I made it through at around 2:30 am, I had my fingers crossed that we hadn't missed any turtles. but luck was not on my side this time. by the time I reached the inlet, I was pretty disappointed. No less than 4 leatherbacks had nested down there tonight, all finished up and gone before 1 am (you can tell from the track going back to the water and the level of the tide). so I sat at the inlet for a while, looking at the dredge clearing out the channel. might as well head back... but I was to catch one lucky break. about 15 minutes after I started north, I came across a new leatherback track. this turtle was digging her egg chamber at 4:15 am. It turned out to be Kylie, first seen on May 8th. I felt happy about seeing her and oh well about the others... the turtles always seem to beat us, no matter how hard we try to catch them all! at least it was rewarding to see Sara attempting to nest again, and knowing that we probably helped her to do that...

  • A bad experience

    Last night I encountered "Sara", a leatherback that we first encountered during the 2003 season. She had just finished digging an egg chamber and was getting ready to drop her eggs. I snuck up behind her and noticed that her cloaca (the cavity that the intestinal and reproductive tracts empty into) was very large and inflamed. We had several leatherbacks on the beach at this time, so I left her and headed north to find some more turtles. Nothing else. I headed back down to watch Sara finish her nest and was concerned that she still had not laid any eggs, though she seemed to be trying very hard. I made a few unsuccessful phone calls to our veterinary folks to see if there was anything I could do for her. After about 15 minutes of watching her struggle, I put on some gloves and took a look to see if there was anything I could see. I did not see anything external, so I went a little further and reached in and pulled out a football sized mass of plastic from her cloaca! She was plugged up by plastic debris she had ingested. I took out at least two masses of plastic and she seemed to be doing better. Her cloaca decreased in size by 2/3 and was not as sensitive as it was earlier. She covered her empty nest and crawled back into the water. We took a few images and collected the plastic. After chatting with our veterinarian Nancy Mettee and Jeanette Wyneken this morning we think that Sara has a good chance of passing the rest of the plastic and will likely return to nest. Leatherbacks and all marine life face the threat of eating plastics everyday out in the ocean. Please try to reduce the quantity of plastics out in the environment.   • a two turtle trend

    Two turtles again last night, seems to be a new trend. Chris and I spotted Sara at around 2 am. She was a really pretty turtle that we've seen once before back in April. Around 4 am, we got our second turtle of the night. This one was a new turtle. She was a very fast nester and she was covered in a coat of slime, which makes us wonder where she's been. We decided to name her Aceita. As the new member to this crew, I'm still trying to adjust to the schedule but I'm finding it easier and easier. Running on no sleep is not as bad as it sounds. However, I am still unable to adjust to the bugs, which were very bad last night, but I'm not sure that anyone can adjust to that. Hopefully tonight will go as well as last night, maybe we can get off this two-a-night trend and see a few more turtles! We are still waiting for data on Sierra, Tina, Mariposa and Pesca, the four turtles that we placed satellite transmitters on last week. We'll keep you posted as soon as we hear something.
