    yesterday when I did the blog, I wanted to say 'we guarantee that there will be turtles tonight!' but I held off because that usually means we don't get any at all. we had 2 visitors last night - Deb and Andrea - not the turtles, but the actual people who have turtles named after them! it was a gorgeous night for riding the beach, a bit busy with people because it's Friday and near the full moon. but the tide was going out most of the night and Niki and I had a clear path in front of our beach vehicles. it seemed very slow at first, the tide ebbing away (all the wind has stopped and so have the waves), and very few loggerheads coming out to nest. but our luck changed after the tide started to come in. Niki was the first to call, she had Oregon north of the Reef Club - Oregon was just finishing up her nest. Debbie Sobel (Sea Turtle Conservation League of Singer Island) and I were on the south beach when Niki called so we knew our turtle was not far away. we headed into MacArthur Park with high expectations and were surprised to see a couple of tracks near the south end. but luckily it was just a false crawl, we hadn't missed her nesting. we continued to the inlet and waited there for about 20 minutes. I was hoping that the false crawling turtle would reappear by the time we went back. sure enough, by the time we got back, there was a huge turtle already laying eggs in the Park. It was Ursa and she was nesting nearly on top of a nest from May 13th. Ursa has now been seen 3 times in the park and all of her nests are within 100 m of each other. we finished up the night in the office with Chris and filled out data sheets and had some coffee...so...I think I'm out of stories for now - we'll see who shows up tonight.

  • a long wait for a turtle…

    A beautiful full moon and cool weather greeted us as we began our survey tonight. with high tide at 9 pm, there was the possibility of an early turtle but our first passes revealed nothing - except a short false crawl down on Singer Island - one of those frustrating semi-circles right at the tide line. we met up with some friends at the office, including folks from the National Save the Sea Turtle Foundation (supporters of our GPS study), and chatted a while. it rained briefly around 2 am (cold front passing over) and then we headed out once again. Volunteer Vivien joined me and we went down to the inlet, arriving around 3:15 am. I was feeling a little sleepy so I took a quick nap, with my head ridiculously cradled on the steering wheel of the Gator (it's amazing where one can catch a few short minutes of sleep). at 4:10 am we decided we'd better head back. it had become quite cold. a little way up the beach, we found what we'd been hoping for all night long. a track winding up the beach... and the turtle had just begun to cover her nest. It was Navi, first seen in 2003. we thought it was probably Navi that had false crawled earlier. we continued on - after I spoke to chris and he told me that Niki had a turtle (Carla) up on Hutchinson - we thought we may have more too. sure enough, about 3 km later we came across Ursa in MacArthur Beach State Park - she'd been seen there by chris 11 nights ago. that was it for us, a long wait but happy results. chris spent the final couple hours of the night with the vhf receiver, trying to hear where Musca is - her latest satellite position had put her right off Juno Beach and chris could hear the vhf beeping, indicating she was in the area. she is due to nest on Tuesday night, but you never know, she might be early...

  • New calendar system

    Who needs the Gregorian, Mayan or Julian system?? Maybe we should start using the Leatherback calendar. Yesterday we had a turtle (Luna) arrive on her exact 4 year anniversary of her first recorded nest. Then, last night I came across a nesting leatherback with tag scars and PIT tag. I added a few new tags and checked her PIT tag number. It seemed like an odd number to me so I quickly checked the datasheets and located her number. It was Ursa. The second turtle to be tagged here on Juno Beach. She was only 2 days off from her original tagging date! So now we have found the first and second tagged leatherback. I guess "mary" is due tonight... It is fun to look back on all the old datasheets and remember the experience of our inaugural 2001 season. It seems as if all of our old leatherback friends are joining us this season. With all of the new girls showing up now and the "old girls" arriving also I guess this is going to be a huge season. 2001 was a record nesting year for us and we are expecting this year to be just as good or better! Last night I heard from Dean Bagley at UCF in Melbourne beach. She was ecstatic when I answered her call at around 1AM. She found "China Girl"! China has been nesting there regularly for many years now and has been tracked via satellite for 2 seasons. Here harness and transmitter were missing once again - this is a good thing! The harness and trasnmitter are designed to fall off after a certain period of time and it is good to see that they are working.

    it is really starting to feel like summer. it was hot out there last night, and we saw one returning turtle. Ursa was back; we'd seen her 10 days ago. As well, yesterday morning Pete Quincy (morning nesting surveyor) happened to come upon one of our 2001 turtles as she was finishing up her nest around 630 am. It was Vela and this year she has started her nesting season up on Jupiter Island, which is just north of our study area.

    oh, and Shana has named her turtle from the 8th - Sole.

    what a beautiful night on the beach. the stars were back out again after all that rain of the past few days (apparently more on the way), and it was lovely and warm. the tide was just starting to go back out and when the tide is low all night, it's hard to guess whether you will get an early turtle or a late one. turns out we had some of each. on Chris's first pass to the north, he was surprised to come across a fresh leatherback nest - she had been on the beach before dark, and nested at high tide. there's no way we are starting our nightly surveys at 6 pm - they are long enough! so we didn't get to see her.

    but then on my northbound trip just after 1 am, I saw the unmistakable large black shape on the beach ahead even before I saw her track. she was starting to dig her egg chamber. I called Chris to let him know, and since I had not covered to my northern turnaround for some time, I thought I better do that. I figured I had about half an hour before I would be able to tag this turtle anyway. so I headed north again and hadn't gone far before I saw another track up the beach. this turtle was already laying her eggs so I knew I only had a few minutes to get the tags on before she started to move. I worked quickly and left her covering her nest. called Chris again, who by this time was becoming disgusted with me always getting to spot turtles! but he said he'd meet me at the southern turtle (the one I'd spotted first). I hurried back to her and discovered that she too was laying her eggs. she did not have any flipper tags but I scanned her shoulder and was surprised to hear the PIT tag reader beep. I looked her up on the list of turtles and found she was Ursa - a turtle we had tagged in 2001 and seen 3 times that season. she had lost both of her flipper tags, which is a first for us. but we gave her new ones before she finished nesting and then we headed back out once again.

    my phone rang in my pocket just after 3 am. Chris sounded happy to report that he'd just tagged yet another new turtle. a three-turtle night. nights like these go by so fast and are so much fun. it does make even the rainy nights and turtle-less nights completely worthwhile. I'm going to name my new turtle Jenny (that one's for you William - thanks for keeping an eye on us) and will update when Chris decides on a name for his new turtle, which by the way is our 90th tagged leatherback on Juno Beach (3 year total - and counting). more tonight.....now to my bed....
