The Argos satellite system continues to relay data from the tag that Katia was towing. This tag is programmed to send as much data as it can before the small lithium battery is exhausted. As you can see from the image below, we have almost received a complete history from this tag. We are still missing a good bit of data from the month of September and we hope that these data will be relayed to us. Hopefully once we receive and process the data, her track back towards Virgina and North Carolina will be revealed.
In the image below, you can see the gaps in data which are slowly being filled in.
Sea turtle tracking fund
We are seeking a total of $8,500 for:
Satellite transmitter and satellite collection fees ($8,500)
One of the best tools that we have to understand how leatherbacks behave while they are in our waters each summer is the "satellite transmitter." These small (expensive) devices collect a lot of data when deployed on a leatherback turtle. Along with very precise GPS locations, the preferred device that we utilize also collects diving depth and water temperature data.
The purchase of additional satellite transmitters will allow us to continue to gather data on how leatherback sea turtles utilize the nearshore waters of Florida. Each season it is our goal to collect data on the movements of leatherbacks between nesting events. All data collected by these satellite transmitters is posted and shared online here on our website.
This device would be used for two seasons before the battery runs out and will need to be replaced. Check out the results of previous satellite tracking HERE
