Help us fund the upcoming 2018 field season.
Our study is conducted entirely by volunteers and is completely funded by grants, personal funds and community support. Each year we seek funding to repair equipment and replace items.

We are seeking a total of $5,000 for:
Satellite transmitter and satellite collection fees ($4,000)
One of the best tools that we have to understand how leatherbacks behave while they are in our waters each summer is the "satellite transmitter." These small (expensive) devices collect a lot of data when deployed on a leatherback turtle. Along with very precise GPS locations, the preferred device that we utilize also collects diving depth and water temperature data.
The purchase of a new satellite transmitter will allow us to continue to gather data on how leatherback sea turtles utilize the nearshore waters of Florida. Each season it is our goal to collect data on the movements of leatherbacks between nesting events. All data collected by these satellite transmitters is posted and shared online here on our website.
This device would be used for two seasons before the battery runs out and will need to be replaced. Check out the results of previous satellite tracking HERE
General supplies ($1,000)
Each year we need funding to repair equipment, and replace items such as;
- Betadine and Alcohol swabs
- Nitrile gloves
- ATV parts
Funds are also used to pay for server costs to fully automate our data collection system and help ensure safety and allow communication between our volunteers out on the beach at night.
